Frequently Asked Questions:
WHAT IS REFORMER PILATES?
The Pilates reformer is a traditional piece of Pilates equipment. This is a unique system, (which looks like a bed with springs) which incorporates a sliding carriage, ropes, and pulleys.
The origins of the Pilates reformer date back to the first Pilates studio in New York in the 1920’s. It was designed by Joseph Pilates himself and, was initially used to help dancers get stronger. So, he called it the Universal Reformer.
DO YOU HAVE BEGINNER REFORMER PILATES CLASSES?
Our classes are for all levels, as options are given throughout the class. We ask that members arrive 5 minutes early so they can meet the instructor and go over the basics of the reformer.
WHAT HAPPENS IN A REFORMER PILATES CLASS?
Each class at the Pilates Reformer Studio will build your core muscles as well as focus on your breathing, flexibility, and strength.
In your first Reformer Pilates class, we will take you through the foundations of the reformer bed, how it works, how to change the different spring options and the many positions you can take.
Each person in the class will be working on a separate Reformer which means you won’t be left to figure out anything on your own. We’ll make sure each person is working with the right level of resistance, ensuring you keep safe and free from injury and can develop at your own pace.
Many of the exercises performed on the reformer are like those in a mat class. So, if you have experienced a mat-style class before, you have the benefit of a little preview of some of the moves. But don’t worry, this isn’t necessary.
HOW DOES A REFORMER WORK?
The Reformer’s many attachments allow additional exercises, beyond what can be done on a mat. This system increases the range of application and modification to traditional yoga-style exercises. While yoga is considered a form of exercise that has the practitioner focus inward, Pilates asks you to increase awareness on your physical body and strength.
As such, you can enjoy a far greater range of exercises. Reformer Pilates works multiple areas across the core and the muscles of the arms and legs. In addition, the use of a Reformer allows people with a limited range of movement or pre-existing injuries, to do modified exercises.
CAN ANYONE DO A REFORMER CLASS?
Whilst the Pilates Reformer might resemble a medieval torture device, don’t let that sway you from giving it a go! It is a low-impact workout that can result in significant gains in long, lean muscles as well as strength, endurance, and flexibility.
It is a very accessible way to build strength in core muscles for better posture, balance, and flexibility. Plus, many celebrities including Lady Gaga, Cameron Diaz, Miley Cyrus and Reese Witherspoon, often mention Pilates as being the only form of exercise which keeps them strong and healthy.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR IN CLASS?
For Reformer Pilates, freedom of movement is important. You want to be able to exercise comfortably and without restrictions. So don’t wear anything too loose or too tight. Make sure to opt for something you can move freely in, like leggings or close-fitting shorts and a stretchy top or t-shirt.
Full toe-covering socks are also required for any reformer equipment class. This is to avoid your feet slipping while on the Reformer. However, don’t worry as you will be able to purchase anything you need from the Pilates Reformer Studio.
